Larger, dedicated library facilities figure prominently in the National Library's wish list; at the time of writing some Ministry of Information and Culture funds have been earmarked for the construction of a new reading room in the compound to the rear of the building, but a foreign donor partner has not yet been identified and in any case it has not yet been possible to relocate the retired government cadres who are presently housed within the compound.
There is an urgent need for IT equipment and training with a view to facilitating the library's large workload, creating a LAN system and designing a library website.

Within the past few years National Library staff have drawn up recommendations to the Ministry for the establishment of a
Lao Library Association with a view to the further development of the librarianship profession in Laos. Formal endorsement of this idea is currently awaited.
Despite their evident mutual interests and needs, there has to date been little contact between the National Library and the
Department of Archives, which is run by the Prime Minister's Office. The National Library has apparently proposed joint sessions of work for document comparison and exchange and has also requested details of documents held in the National Archives for inclusion in the National Bibliography, but as yet neither formal nor informal channels of co-operation have been established between the two institutions.
