After a comparatively late start in the mid 1990s, tourism emerged by 2000 as one of the country's top foreign income earners. Since that time it has consistently ranked ahead of logging and garment exports and now seems poised to exceed even hydroelectric power sales.

As in neighbouring countries of South East Asia, the challenge now is to manage the sector in a sustainable way.
