The Art of Silk is a project of the Lao Women's Union Gender Resource Information and Development Centre (GRID). Based within the Lao Women's Union compound in Vientiane, the project aims to protect and preserve old textiles, train weavers in traditional techniques, including natural dyes, and make their products available in its shop, which sells a variety of silk and cotton fabrics, as well as bags, scarves, blouses and shirts. Upstairs is a small museum which displays some of the old textiles which are the inspiration for the modern weavings, including the red-and-black fabrics of Attapeu, the intricately mixed weaving techniques of Samneua and the indigo batik of the Hmong. Proceeds from sales go directly to the weavers.
