Kongphath 9Kongphat Luangrath was born on 4 December 1950 in Vientiane.
After studying wood carving and painting at the National School of Fine Arts (now the National Faculty of Fine Arts) he worked in the field of book production and illustration before studying for a Diploma in Graphic Art at the National Academy of Fine Art in Sophia, Bulgaria. On his return to Laos in 1988 he worked at the Education Publishing House as textbook illustrator and book designer. Since 1999 he has pursued a freelance career as an artist, painter and printmaker and in 2005 he began teaching printmaking at the National Faculty of Fine Arts.
Although his primary passion is printmaking, Kongphat has become known internationally for his oil paintings, which have been exhibited in the Netherlands, Germany, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Japan and Germany.
Kongphat, Isolated VillageGroup exhibitions include the Exhibition of Graphic Art at Tolbukhil, Bulgaria (1988), the 6th Bangladesh Biennale, Dhaka (1993), the 4th Asian Art Show, Fukuoka, Japan (1994), the 7th Bangladesh Biennale, Dhaka (1996), the Exhibition of Master Works from ASEAN Countries at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1997), the Exhibition of Three Artists from the Greater Mekong Subregion at Chatvin Gallery in Berlin, Germany (1999), the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Award Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1999), the Isaan and Lao Artists Group Exhibition in Vientiane (1999), the ASEAN Art Expo at SPAFA in Bangkok, Thailand (2000), the Isaan and Lao Artists Group Exhibition in Bangok, Thailand (2001), the Isaan and Lao Artists Group Exhibition in Khon Kaen, Thailand (2001), the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Award Exhibition in Bali, Indonesia (2002), the ASEAN Art Expo in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2002), and the Identities vs Globalisation Art Exhibition in Chiang Mai, Thailand, at the National Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand and at the Dahlem Museum in Berlin, Germany (2004).
In 1999 Kongphath had solo exhibitions of paintings during the Asia Pacific Week in German Development Services, Kladower, in Schöneberg and at the Chatvin Gallery in Berlin, Germany.
