Stretching nearly 15 kilometres from Ban Phosy north of Thakhek, to the Sebangfai River and occasionally reaching 15 metres in height, the Great Wall remains something of a mystery. In some parts clearly of natural origin and in others apparently built by human hand, the wall is believed by some local people to have been the main protective wall of the ancient Mon city of Sri Gotapura, the capital of which was located in the area of today’s That Sikhottabong. As yet no excavations have been conducted to investigate definitively the origins of the wall. The largest sections of the wall lie immediately to the west of National Highway 13, four kilometres north of Thakhek.
