Located some three kilometres to the west of Wat Phrabat Phonesane on the bank of the Mekong River lies its sister temple Wat Phrabat, built on the spot where the Buddha is said to have drunk water before resting. The building at the foot of the hill contains some excellent murals recounting the Phravet Sandone story and a ceiling painting which depicts astrological images. Like Wat Phrabat Phonesane, Wat Phrabat was last renovated in 1987. Every November people gather at the riverbank next to Wat Phrabat to see the mysterious ‘Naga Lights’, rising from the waters of the Mekong. A strangely-shaped rock formation 500 metres from Wat Phrabat is said to be the ‘Naga Palace’.
