Established in 1979 within the former French Provincial Governor's house, Savannakhet Provincial Museum once housed an important collection of natural, ethnological, historical and revolutionary artefacts relating to Savannakhet Province and its people. Unfortunately the building is now in a serious state of disrepair and most of the artifacts have already been moved for safe keeping to government offices. Apart from a few untitled prehistoric axe heads and ceramic pieces, all that is left is an exhibition of photographs relating to the activities of former President Kaysone Phomvihane, the course of the revolution in Savannakhet and recent Party activities in the Province. Anti-aircraft guns and the remains of an American aircraft lie in the garden. Lacking funds to repair the museum building, the provincial authorities are currently considering an offer from a local businessman to buy the land, demolish the former French Provincial Governor's house and build a new hotel on the site.
