Attapeu Province occupies an area of 10,320 square kilometres and has a total population of 112,171 people (2005 census). It incorporates five districts - Muang Sansai, Muang Saysettha, Muang Samakhisai, Muang Sanamsai and Muang Phouvong. Apart from the majority Lao population, Attapeu Province is home to a number of Austro-Asiatic peoples who may be categorised as Mon-Khmer - Brau, Chieng, Loven, Nha Heun, Oy, Sedang, Sou, Talieng and Yae (Mon-Khmer/Bahnaric) and Alak (Mon-Khmer/Katuic). The province is rugged, wild and very scenic, but transportation is very difficult, especially by land in the rainy season. It is best known for the Bolaven Plateau, which also extends into Champassak, Saravane and Sekong provinces. The town of Samakhisai is situated in a large picturesque valley. Parts of the Hồ Chí Minh Trail can be explored from here, although using a local guide is essential.
