The smallest province in the country, located on the Lao side of the so-called 'Golden Triangle', Bokeo Province borders Thailand and Myanmar and comprises five districts - Muang Hoaixai, Muang Tonpheung, Muang Meung, Muang Pha Oudom and Muang Paktha. In addition to the majority Lao population, Austro-Thai speakers are represented by Lu (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Lao-Lu), Kalom, Tai Dam, Tai Khoen, Tai Yai and Yuan (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Tai), Tai Nua (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/Northern Tay-Thai), and Hmong and Yao (Hmong-Mien); Austro-Asiatic speakers by Khmu (Mon-Khmer/Khmuic), and Lamet and Samtao (Mon-Khmer/Palaungic); and Sino-Tibetan speakers by Akha and Lahu (Sino-Tibetan/Lolo-Burmish). The provincial capital Ban Hoaixai is a busy and prosperous border town with Thailand. Located in the centre of Hoaixai is Wat Chom Khao Manirath, located on a hill and commanding a fine view over Ban Hoaixai, the Mekong River and the surrounding mountains. Bokeo Province occupies an area of 6,196 square kilometres and has a total population of 145,919 people (2005 census).
