Vaguely resembling the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, this large monument was built in 1957, supposedly using US-purchased cement earmarked for the construction of a new airport. The bas-reliefs and ornamentation were created by Thao Chanmee, who studied at the Wat Chanthaburi Art School set up in the 1930s by Prince Phetsarath and Maha Sila Viravongs. Otherwise known to many as the ‘Victory Monument’, it commemorates those who lost their lives in the pre-revolutionary wars. The admission fee entitles visitors to climb to the top, where a magnificent view of the city may be enjoyed.
