Located in the northern part of Laos, Oudomxai Province occupies an area of 15,370 square kilometres and has a total population of 264,830 people (2005 census). It comprises seven districts - Muang Namo, Muang La, Muang Xai, Muang Beng, Muang Nga, Muang Hun and Muang Pakbeng. A mountainous province, it has numerous ethnic groups. In addition to the majority Lao population, Austro-Thai speakers are represented here by Lu (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Lao-Lu), Tai Daeng, Tai Dam, Tai Khao and Yuan (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Tai), Giay (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/Northern Tay-Thai) and Hmong and Yao (Hmong-Mien); Austro-Asiatic speakers by Htin (Mon-Khmer/Khmuic) and Lamet (Palaungic); and Sino-Tibetan speakers by Haw (Han) and Akha, Kongsat, Lolo and Phunoi (Lolo-Burmish). The provincial capital, Muang Xai, lies between two strings of Hmong villages.
