Saysomboun Special Region was set up in 1994 from parts of Borikhamxai, Vientiane and Xieng Khoang Provinces. It occupies an area of 1,105 square kilometres and has a total population of 38,549 people (2005 census). In addition to the majority Lao population, Austro-Thai speakers are represented here by Lu, Lao Isaan and Lao Ngaew (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Lao-Lu), Phuan, Tai Daeng, Tai Dam, Tai Gapong and Yuan (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Tai), Seak, Tai Air, Tai Chiangki, Tai E, Tai Guan, Tai Khang, Tai Mene, Tai Meuy, Tai Nua, Tai Oh, Tai Pao, Tai Poreng, Tai Pouark, Tai Pun, Tai Senkap, Tai Souei, Tai Then, Tai Yor and Tai Yuang (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/Northern Tay-Thai), Cham (Chamic), and Hmong and Yao (Hmong-Mien); and Austro-Asiatic speakers by by Kaleung (Mon-Khmer/Katuic), Khmu and O Du (Mon-Khmer/Khmuic) and Bo, Krih, Liha, Phong, Phon Sung, Thavung, Tum and Muong (Viet-Muong). The Special Region comprises five districts - Muang Phoun, Muang Saysomboun, Muang Hom, Muang Longxan and Muang Thathom.
