Savannakhet Province occupies an area of 21,774 square kilometres and has a total population of 824,662 people (2005 census). It comprises 14 districts – Muang Atsaphangthong, Muang Atsophone, Muang Champhone, Muang Khanthaburi, Muang Nong, Muang Outhoumphone, Muang Phin, Muang Sayburi, Muang Sayphouthong, Muang Sephone, Muang Sonburi, Muang Songkhone, Muang Thapanthong and Muang Viraburi. In addition to the majority Lao population, Austro-Thai speakers are represented here by Lao Isaan (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Lao-Lu), Phu Tai (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Tai) and Cham (Chamic); and Austro-Asiatic speakers by Talieng (Mon-Khmer/Bahnaric) and Bru, Ca Tu, Katang, Kui, Makong, Pa Co and Ta Oi (Mon-Khmer/Katuic). The province centres on Savannakhet town which is situated on the bank of the Mekong River opposite Mukdahan in Thailand. Much of the town's architecture is French colonial.
