Situated 27 kilometres west of Vientiane and five kilometres beyond the Friendship Bridge, this park was established in 1958 by Luang Pu Bounleua Surirat, a well-known priest and mystic who sought to merge Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, mythology and iconography. It contains some 200 concrete statues of the Buddha, Arjuna, Avalokiteshvara, Shiva and Vishnu, created by unskilled artists under Luang Pu's guidance. At one end of the park is the savan where the spirits of good people are believed to reside and bring harmony to the land. Luang Pu Bounleua Surirat moved to Thailand in 1975 and also established a similar park - Sala Kaew Ku Sculpture Gardens - in Nongkhai. He passed away in 2004. Xieng Khuan Buddha Park is currently run as a concession by a private company.
