There are over 100 limestone caves in the Viengsay district of Houaphanh, many of which were used as hideouts and bunkers by revolutionary activists during the Indochina war. These include Tham Than Souphannouvong (formerly known as Tham Phapoun) and Tham Than Kaysone (formerly known as Tham Yonesong), where revolutionary leaders Prince Souphannouvong and Kaysone Phomvihane worked in 1964, and. Tham Than Khamtay (part of Tham Xanglot), which was used by current president Khamtay Siphandone; each cave consist of many compartments, serving as meeting rooms, reception rooms, bedrooms and offices.
