Believed to have been constructed in the mid 16th century on the site of an earlier religious site, the nine metre-high That Inhang ranks as the second most sacred building in southern Laos after Wat Phu Champassak. Like Phra That Luang in Vientiane and That Sikhottabong in Thakhek, it is surrounded by a cloister wall. A hollow chamber in the lower section of the stupa contains a small collection of religious artefacts. The stupa may be accessed by a dirt road leading east from National Highway 6, eight kilometers north of Savannakhet. Each year the site hosts a major festival:
