Vientiane Province occupies an area of 15,927 square kilometres and has a total population of 386,558 people (2005 census). It comprises 12 districts - Muang Kasi, Muang Vangvieng, Muang Fuang, Muang Keo Oudom, Muang Phonhong, Muang Thourakhom, Muang Met, Muang Hinheup, Muang Nakhan, Muang Hom, Muang Longkhan and Muang Viengkham. The main urban centre is Muang Phonhong, while most (but not all) administrative offices are located in Muang Viengkham. Vientiane Province is a province of great natural beauty and incorporates two mountainous national parks - Phou Pha Nang and Phou Khao Khoai - and Nam Ngum Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, which powers the giant Nam Ngum Hydro-Electric Power Station. Much of the province is dissected by the Nam Ngum River, which flows south from Nam Ngum Lake into the Mekong. In addition to the majority Lao population, Austro-Thai speakers are represented here by Lao Isaan and Lu (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Lao-Lu), Phuan, Tai Daeng, Tai Dam and Yuan (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/South Western Tay-Thai/Tai), Tai Nua, Tai Oh, Tai Poreng and Tai Souei (Tai-Kadai/Tay-Thai/Northern Tay-Thai), Cham (Chamic), and Hmong and Yao (Hmong-Mien); and Austro-Asiatic speakers by Khmu (Mon-Khmer/Khmuic).
