Organised annually, the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation recognise the achievement of individuals, organisations or companies in the conservation/restoration of a structure or a series of structures in the private sector which is/are more than 50 years old. Houses, commercial, cultural, religious, industrial or institutional buildings, gardens and bridges, for example, are all eligible for consideration. Public-private partnership projects such as historic towns, urban quarters and rural settlements where the essential elements are more than 50 years old are also eligible. The awards comprise one Award of Excellence, two Awards of Distinction, several Awards of Merit and several Honourable Mentions. Criteria include: the articulation of the structure's heritage values in order to convey the spirit of place through the conservation work; appropriate use or adaptation of the structure; the interpretation of the cultural, social, historical and architectural significance of the structure(s) in the conservation work; the understanding of the technical issues of conservation/restoration in interpreting the structure's significance; the use of appropriate materials; how well any added elements or creative technical solutions respect the character and inherent spatial quality of the structure(s); the manner in which the process and the final product contribute to the surrounding environment and the local community's cultural and historical continuum; the influence of the project on conservation practice and policy locally, nationally, regionally or internationally; the ongoing socio-economic viability and relevance of the project, and provision for its future use and maintenance; and the technical consistency, complexity and sensitivity of the project methodology. The jury comprises one representative from UNESCO plus six to eight conservation experts who are renowned for their knowledge of conservation in the Asia Pacific area. Entries must be submitted to UNESCO by 31 March and the winners will be announced in the following September. Previous Award of Distinction Winners include the Indonesian National Archives Building, Jakarta (2001), the Ahhichatragarh Fort in Nagaur, Rajasthan, India (2002), the Guangyu Ancestral Hall in Conghua City, Guangdong Province, China (2003) and Baltit Fort in Karimabad village in the Hunza region of Pakistan (2004). Winning entries from the Greater Mekong Subregion include the Hội An Old Town Preservation Co-operation Project, Hội An, Việt Nam (Excellent Project, 2000), the Centre for Khmer Studies (CKS) in Siem Reap, Cambodia (Honourable Mention, 2002), Phra Racha Wang Derm Palace complex in Bangkok, Thailand (Award of Merit, 2004), and six traditional communal houses (đình) spanning six provinces of Việt Nam - Đình Bảng (Bắc Ninh Province), Hội An (Quảng Nam Province), Biên Hòa (Đồng Nai), Xuân Hồng (Nam Định Province), Vĩnh Tiến (Thanh Hóa Province) and Đông Hòa Hiệp (Tiền Giang Province) (Award of Merit, 2004).
