The National Spoken Drama Troupe was established in 1980 with the assistance of drama practitioners from Việt Nam and Uzbekistan. Today the 24-strong company produces mainly ‘social theatre’ commissioned and paid for by NGOs such as UNICEF on issues ranging from HIV-AIDS to drug abuse, unexploded ordnance and the importance of clean water. It has a small rehearsal space (which is currently rented out to the College of Dance and Music) above its office in Thanon Manthatourath, but no theatre of its own. Consequently it performs mainly on makeshift stages around the country, although it has also presented the occasional special show for the government at Vientiane’s National Cultural Hall. In addition to ‘social theatre’ the troupe has a very small repertoire of Lao plays, including the late Souvanthone Bouphanouvong’s heroic military drama ‘Power of Love’ and most recently the historical play ‘King Fa Ngum’ written by Bora Phanthavong and dramatised by Hong Nakhon for the anniversary of the founding of Laos in 2003.
