While perhaps not as spectacular as the megalithic sites of Xieng Khouang and Houaphanh Provinces, Tam Hua Pu Cave, located some 20 kilometres from Luang Prabang, is remarkable for the fact that it remained in use - either as a dwelling for hunter gatherers or in later times as a burial site - for at least 7,000 years, from 8,000 BCE to at least the 7th century BCE. Bronze and iron objects were found here during archaeological excavations in the 1990s, as well as beads which indicate that even in this early period the region had trading links with India. Artefacts dating from 100 BCE to 100 CE found in the cave are now on view in the Lao National Museum in Vientiane.
