Located some 60 kilometres north west of Vientiane city, two kilometres east of the main highway to Luang Prabang, this site features two large seated Dvaravati-style Buddha images carved directly into a rock face, with various smaller seated Buddha images dating from the same period nearby. An inscription on the rock face dates the images to the early 11th century. Holes in the rock face suggest that at one time a large canopy was erected to cover the platform in front of the main Buddha images. Local legend holds that Vangxang was once an elephant cemetary, hence its name, which may be translated as 'elephant court'. This site is located in a clearing close to the Vangxang River and may be accessed by entering the Vangxang Resort (telephone 865 (0) 23 211525, 856 (0) 23 211053) from the main highway at Ban Phonngeun - a small fee may be demanded by the resort for use of this road. The site is accessible by car - follow the sign marked 'Tourist Site' some two kilometres through the hills and out onto the other side of the resort towards the Nam Song River.
