Lao Cotton State Enterprise (LCSE) was established in 1984 by the Lao government and the UNDP as a funded textile training and development project to help women in Laos by capitalising on their traditional weaving skills. Since 1996 it has operated as an independent business unit. The company seeks to create job opportunities for the women of Laos by encouraging cotton growth and production through traditional hand weaving. Since its inception it has organised 10 weaving groups and 200 looms in Vientiane Prefecture and in Luang Prabang, Xiang Khouang and Houaphanh Provinces. LCSE prides itself on its comprehensive cotton production process, which starts with the purchase of raw cotton from farmers and involves spinning, dyeing and weaving to produce the finished product. LCSE combines the best of traditional designs and skilful techniques in the production of quality products such as cotton home textiles, combined cotton and leather items, custom-made corporate gifts, men's and women's casual wear and custom-made curtains, cushion covers and bedspreads.
