A joint venture company between the Lao Government (51 per cent through the supervision of the Ministry of Communications, Transport, Post and Construction) and Shinawatra International PLC (49 per cent), Lao Telecommunications Co Ltd is the national telecommunications provider to the Lao PDR. Lao Telecom provides a comprehensive range of services using the latest digital technology, including: nationwide fixed line telephone services using fully digital telephone switching, including wireless and wire-line integration to cover majority of 58 cities and remotes rural areas; mobile telephone GSM cellular 900Mhz covering eight major cities; an international gateway using extensive worldwide high speed routing of international traffic via fibre optics and satellites to connect to major global carriers; a paging service in Vientiane using a high speed broadcast paging system; a public telephone service using magnetic card and chip card technology to serve prime areas that have high human traffic to fulfilled increasing demand for payphone services; and an Internet service based on an advanced platform and expandable facilities.
