Non Formal Education CentreThe Non Formal Education Development Centre (NFEDC) was established in 1992 as the Non Formal Education Centre in accordance with Decree 133/ES of the Minister of Education and Sport, which transferred responsibility for the provision of technical assistance for non formal education from the former School for Complementary Education. It acquired its current name in 1996 in accordance with Decree 188/E of the Minister of Education. Operating under the management of the Department of Non Formal Education of the Ministry of Education with a complement of 38 staff members, the Centre is responsible for: (i) developing the national curriculum, teaching and learning materials and basic vocational materials in non formal education; (ii) building the capacity of non formal education managers and technical personnel for non formal education; (iii) studying and providing information in the field of technical resources for non formal education; and (iv) providing basic vocational skills training for non formal education. In addition to the development of non formal education curricula and the provision of handbooks on the five basic areas of sewing, food processing, tourism services, agriculture and livestock management, the Centre produces supplementary materials such as handbooks, village newspapers and posters; organises meetings, seminars and training workshops for non formal education administrators and technical personnel at all levels; offers training on basic vocational knowledge and skills for educationally disadvantaged people and unemployed youth; organises educational upgrading programmes for government staff, soldiers and police; and provides various sources of printed information. The Centre runs two newspapers, though at the time of writing both are in temporary abeyance due to lack of funds:
