Located some three kilometres west of the main urban centre of Ban Phonhong, Dane Pa is currently earmarked for development as a major natural and cultural heritage destination in Vientiane Province. It comprises a 14 kilometre-long plateau of strangely-shaped rock, intersected throughout its length by the Dane Pa River and featuring a variety of patterns and markings (including honeycomb formations) which are indicative of prehistoric volcanic activity in the area. At Ban Namlinh one part of the rock face contains three carved Buddha images which are believed to date back to the first millennium BC, although they have been extensively renovated and redecorated at various times over the centuries, most recently in 1957. A Buddha Footprint is located nearby, protected by a canopy. A further 1.5 kilometres to the west is an area known locally as Dane Nangsu, where an ancient inscription (possibly of Mon origin) was once carved into the rock face, however over the past few decades the inscription has been removed by persons unknown and there is nothing now to be seen. Dane Phra may be accessed via the entrance road to the Vientiane Provincial Finance Office which leads west from the main street of Ban Phonhong - passing the Water Supply Office, visitors should continue a further two kilometres by car until reaching an old wooden bridge - from here the site may be reached on foot 500 metres further on.
