Wat Phra Rasakheua was constructed around a first millennium linga, perhaps of Khmer origin, which is believed locally to have been used as the lak muang or foundation pillar for a large city after the cities of Vientiane-Viengkham had been taken over by Tai-speaking rulers in the 12th and 13th centuries. The temple is located in Ban Sapheua, east of the main road from Muang Thourakhom to Vientiane city, some 50 kilometres north of the capital. NB since it is located on the east bank of the Nam Ngum River, it is accessible from Muang Phonhong and Muang Viengkham only by car ferry.
