Part of the contemporary music support agency the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) and affiliated to New Music the New Music Composers' Group specifically provides support and services for contemporary composers. To become a member of the New Music Composers’ Group (NMK), one must be at least a part-time professional composer or composition student with a Norwegian citizenship. The NMK is a volunteer and non-profit CSO.
The NMK was founded in 1978. In recent years it has enjoyed a significant increase in activity, with more concerts being produced, workshops, lectures and collaborations with Young Nordic Music and the affiliated organisation New Music's own Happy Days festival (taking place in Oslo in April).
The New Music Composers’ Group (NMK) aims to be a flexible and unpredictable part of Norway’s cultural scene, promoting the ideas and characteristics that the membership body should represent at any given moment. To ensure that the organisation is keeping up to date and representing current ideas within the field of musical composition, membership is restricted to 5 years only.
NMK produces concerts with different ensembles playing pieces by NMK’s members at different venues around Norway. They also arranges workshops where the members may have their pieces rehearsed by professional ensembles, and arrange a series of lectures known as The Forum, featuring high-profile composers, musicologists and artists / researchers from other fields than music.
Whilst NMK have limited international profile they would be keen to engage in international collaborations in the future.
