Originally established in 1816, this 30-member regional theatre company for Sør-Trøndelag County is one of the oldest in Norway. It presents a varied programme which ranges from straight drama to musical theatre.
The Trøndelag Theatre building was originally erected in 1816 and today represents the oldest theatre structure still in operation in all of the Nordic countries. However, in September 1997 the refurbished Trøndelag Theatre re-opened as part of a modern complex incorporating the old auditorium but supplemented by four new stages of various shapes and sizes, so that when activity is at its peak an audience of 1,300 might now visit the venue on any one day. The venue is home to the resident Trøndelag Theatre Company. The Hovedscenen (Main Stage) presents a wide programme and has technical facilities to stage large productions such as musicals. The Studioscenen (Studio Stage) is a black box where experimental drama is the main focus. The Gamlescenen (Old Stage) is the original theatre and is a small and intimate space programmed with a repertoire to suit the surroundings. The Theatrecafeen (Theatrecafé) is a venue for smaller shows, built in turn-of-the-century Jugend style. Finally there is the Teaterkjelleren (Basement Studio Theatre), where the actor and the text is the only focus. All venues are air-conditioned and heated, availability through partnership arrangement with the venue only.
