The Elizabeth Project Ideas Centre (EPI Centre) was established in 1997 by theatre artists Sebastijan Horvat (stage director), Nataša Matjašec, Klavdija Zupan and Petra Veber (set designer). The Centre aims to operate in line with the basic ideas of 'first performance': minimalism, reduction and limiting of theatrical expression. Verbal and artistic languages are accorded equal status: every project deals with a literary model and a visual concept, which are created anew. The first performance was the eponymous Elizabeth Project, and in 1998 the Centre produced its second show Ion, which won an award at the Slovene Drama Week in Kranj. Horvat's productions Instruction, Caligula, Ion, Makbet and Sharpen Your Senses divided both critics as well as the Slovene public.
The group of renowned artists who work within the framework of the EPI Centre continuously seek new collaborators and new ideas related to innovative drama theatre, with a focus on the epic and the poetic, philosophy, the image and the body. The EPI Centre’s past productions include: Juliette Justine staged at Ljubljana Central Post Office, and A Story about O, all directed by Sebastijan Horvat, School Notebook, directed by Ivana Djilas, Cioran, conceived by stage director Jernej Lorenci, and Oidipus by Jaka Ivanc. In 2005 the performance Misfits(z), a drama opera inspired by the text The Hip Hop Waltz of Euridyce by Reza Abdolah, was staged. The last production was the Vorher/Nacher (Schimmelpfennig). The performances were usually co-produced by Ptuj City Theatre, Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Maribor, Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Ljubljana - Drama, Mladinsko Theatre, Glej Theatre and Ljubljana Dance Theatre (PTL).
In co-production with Ljubljana Dance Theatre, the EPI Centre has staged choreographies by Matjaž Farič, Snježana Premuš, Valentina Čabro and Ariella Vidach. EPI Centre productions have also appeared at several festivals, including the Mladi levi Festival and the Exodos International Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts in Ljubljana, Neighbouring Voices in Bulgaria, the New European Theatre Festival in Moscow, the Biennale dei giovani artisti dell'Europa e del Mediterraneo in Rome, the Four Days in Motion Festival in Prague and the Mittelfest in Čedad in Cividale, Italy.
