Located on a hill on the north bank of the Nha Trang River in the Vĩnh Phước District of Nha Trang city, the Pô Nagar temple complex (also known as Tháp Bà or 'Lady Tower') was constructed between the 10th and 12th centuries on a site which had been in use for Hindu worship since the 2nd century CE. The complex once incorporated seven or eight towers, but only four now remain. Dating from the latter half of the 10th century, the unique north western temple with its horse saddle-shaped roof is the oldest part of the complex and is classified as representing the Mỹ Sơn A1 architectural style (10th century). The central kalan, a masterpiece of Chăm art, was built in the 11th century and is categorised as being of transitional Mỹ Sơn A1-Bình Định architectural style (early 11th-mid 12th centuries). The small southern temple was erected in the 12th century and is seen as representing the Bình Định architectural style (late 11th-early 14th centuries). The central kalan is dedicated to the Lady Pô Nagar, a local noblewoman credited with the development of weaving and agriculture in the area who was worshipped after her death as a manifestation of the Goddess Uma, consort of Shiva. Just below the complex at the foot of the hill are two rows of 14 columns on a rectangular base which, it is presumed, used to support a long tile-roofed house in which visitors prepared their offerings before proceeding to the upper towers. Each year Pô Nagar Chăm Towers play host to the Tháp Bà Festival, held in March, and the Kate (Chăm New Year) Festival, held in September-October.
