Located 180 kilometres east of Hà Nội, Hạ Long Bay comprises thousands of volcanic islands which rise from the waters of the Bắc Bộ Gulf, covering a total area of 1,500 square kilometres. The bay was recently recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. In Vietnamese Hạ Long means ‘descending dragon’ – according to legend a great dragon plunged from the mountains into the sea, its flailing tail creating the unique rock formations which characterise this beautiful spot. Hạ Long Bay is now one of the region’s leading tourist destinations. In 2003 the Vietnamese government announced plans to set up an Ecological Museum in Hạ Long City at an estimated cost of US$17.4 million. The funding is expected to come from official overseas development aid and from both local and foreign companies, with a target completion date of 2005.
