![]() This famous pagoda was constructed by Lord Nguyễn Hoàng in 1601 after he had a vision in which an old woman told him that the site had supernatural powers and that a pagoda should be built here. Nguyễn King Thiệu Trị (1840-1847) added the seven-storey, 21-metre octagonal Phước Duyên Tower in 1844. The complex was badly damaged in 1943, but was extensively renovated over the subsequent 30-year period. The complex is laid out in a linear pattern with the Phước Duyên Tower closest to the river and three temples - Đại Hùng, Địa Tạng and Quan Âm – behind it. Items of note housed in the pagoda include a 2,000-kilogram bronze bell cast in 1710, a stele dating from 1715 and the blue Austin motor car which the Venerable Thích Quảng Đức drove to Sài Gòn in 1963 before immolating himself in protest at the policies of the Ngô Đình Diệm regime.
