![]() Located in a walled, 12-hectare park at Dương Xuân Thượng village, 7 kilometres from central Huế, the beautiful tomb of Từ Đức (1848-1883) was constructed between 1864 and 1867 as a second royal palace. At a time when the west was challenging the country’s independence, the king came here often to pursue his scholarly interests away from the cares of the world. The complex incorporates some 50 edifices, including the Hòa Khiêm Temple (Hòa Khiêm Điện) which Từ Đức used as a palace, and the colourful Minh Kiêm Đường Royal Theatre (Minh Kiêm Đường) where performances of tuồng were staged.
