![]() Originally set up in 1970 as the Department of Hán-Nôm, the Institute was formally established in 1979. Its principal functions are: to collect and maintain Hán-Nôm documents throughout the country; to organise research, translation and publication of Hán-Nôm documents; and to train researchers in Hán-Nôm studies. The Institute's library holds an important collection of Nguyễn dynasty court documents in chữ Hán (classical Han Chinese, also known as chữ nho), the ideographic script devised for transcribing spoken Vietnamese known as chữ nôm and the romanised script quốc ngữ. The Institute issues numerous publications including the Hán-Nôm Magazine.
