![]() Yên Tử mountain is the highest peak in the southern part of the Việt Bắc region, standing at 1,068 metres above sea level. When King Trần Nhân Tông abdicated in 1299 in order to become a monk, he settled in Yên Tử and founded the Trúc Lâm (Bamboo Forest) Zen Buddhist sect, followers of which have been living in the area ever since. The side of the mountain is dotted with pagodas, shrines and stupas and at the summit lies the Ðồng Pagoda. A cable car was installed at the site in 2002. A major festival is held here annually:
