Located some 20 kilometres from Bạc Liêu town in Trung Hưng Village, Vĩnh Hưng Hamlet, Vĩnh Lợi District, Vĩnh Hưng Tower is one of just three surviving Khmer edifices in southern Việt Nam. It was first recognised as an important vestige by French archaeologist de Laponguière, who in 1911 placed the tower on a list of 14 important monuments in Cochinchina under the name Trà Long Tower. Since that time it has been known under various names, including Lục Hiền Tower, and Bhah Dhat Tower. Originally part of a larger group of buildings situated in an enclosure 91 metres from east to west and 53 metres from north to south, the tower is believed to date from the 9th century and is of relatively simple design with no decorative work. Excavations conducted at the site in 1911, 1917 and most recently in 1959 unearthed many important artefacts related mainly to religious ritual, including several stone stelae bearing Sanskrit inscriptions.
