The Office of Museum Management is one of three key offices of the National Cultural Heritage Department of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Việt Nam currently has some 115 museums, including seven national museums, provincial/city museums and special museums, including museums belonging to the armed forces. There is also a proposal to establish a new Museum of National History.
The Office's responsibilities include: (i) appraising proposals to establish national and specific museums for the Minister’s approval; (ii) appraising and submitting to the Minister for decision within his jurisdiction projects of construction and display and organising the activities of national museums, specific museums and museums of provinces and cities reporting directly to the central government; (iii) organising the appraisal of proposals for the Minister’s consideration and approval under his jurisdiction relating to the transportation of relics, antiques and national precious objects abroad and copying of relics, antiques and national precious objects belonging to national museum and specific museums; (iv) overseeing specific and professional activities of the museum; and (v) appraising and submitting to the Minister for decision ranking and cancellations of ranking of museums.
Some activities of international co-operation carried out in recent years by the Office include: (ii) co-ordinating the preparation of profiles and preparating procedures for the display of objects in the exhibition of 'Việt Nam – Past and Contemporary' hosted by the Royal Museum of History and Arts in Brussels (Belgium) and the Ethnology Museum in Vienna (Austria) in 2003-2004; (ii) organising a training workshop of conservation and museum for 20 officers officers and experts of the Lao Department of Museums and Archaeology in October 2003; (iii) acceding to the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and expanding the activities of ICOM Việt Nam by hosting the workshop 'Protecting Cultural Heritage in South East Asia' in April 2001; (iv) co-ordinating the submission of profiles for display objects in the Guimet Museum of Asian Arts (France); (v) working with the Asia Association and the Museum of Asian Arts (USA) and various Vietnamese museums to organise a Vietnamese cultural and art exhibition in the USA in 2005; (vi) collaborating with the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information (COCI) and various Vietnamese museums to implement the project ‘Information Network of ASEAN Cultural Heritage'; (vi) working with the Việt Nam History Museum in researching the selection of objects for inclusion in the publication 'The Most Valuable Collections of ASEAN Museums' organised by the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information (COCI); and (vii) working with Visiting Arts to prepare the heritage section of the Việt Nam Cultural Profile.
