 This leading 45-member municipal theatre troupe traces its origins back to the Southern Region Drama Company (Đoàn kịch Nam Bộ) which was established in the north in 1954. After Reunification in 1975 the company moved to Hồ Chí Minh City and became the Mekong River Drama Company (Đoàn kịch Cửu Long Giang). It was later renamed the Hồ Chí Minh City Drama Company (Đoàn kịch Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh). In 1999 the latter was merged with the Young Stage Arts Company (Đoàn Nghệ thuật Sân khấu trẻ) to form the present-day Hồ Chí Minh City Drama Theatre (Nhà hát Kịch Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh). The company performs in various venues around the city and also tours throughout the south of Việt Nam.
