![]() Giải Phóng Film Studios is one of three state-owned film companies in Việt Nam. Originally founded in 1963 under the name Liberation Film Studio (Xưởng Phim Giải Phóng), it operated at the front during the American War, producing revolutionary newsreels and propaganda films to be shown in southern villages controlled by the National Liberation Front. After Reunification it became first the General Film Studio (Xưởng Phim Tổng Hợp, 1977), then the General Film Enterprise (Xí Nghiệp Phim Tổng Hợp, 1986), and finally the Giải Phóng Film Studios (Hãng Phim Giải Phóng, 1987). It now comprises three departments – Feature Films, Documentary Films and Cartoon Films. Despite its limited facilities and outdated equipment, the studio has produced many important feature films since its inception. It has also participated in several international co-productions, including Trần Anh Hùng’s Xích Lô (‘Cyclo’) and most recently Philip Noyce's highly acclaimed remake of The Quiet American (2002) starring Brendan Fraser and Sir Michael Caine.
