 Established in 1960, the Việt Nam Animated Film Company has since carved a niche for itself as Việt Nam’s sole producer of cartoon films aimed at child audiences. It is currently producing direct for video; in 2001 it collaborated with Hồ Chí Minh City Book Distribution Company (FAHASA) to produce 10 cartoons on video for the southern provincial market. Its videos, including Cái bóng của sói (‘Shadow of the Wolf’), Chiếc bình vàng (‘Pot of Gold’), Tổ tiên của loài ếch (‘Forefathers of the Frog’) and Chú gấu vụng (‘The Clumsy Bear’), sell for 25,000 VNĐ (cUS$1.50) each. The company has recently unveiled plans to establish a children’s cultural centre at its headquarters in order to draw attention to the craft of animation and the Vietnamese animated film industry, which is in urgent need of investment, new technology and new audiences.
