The Public Libraries Department is responsible for the national network of public libraries. Two are operational in the capital – Kabul Central Library near Malik Ashgar Crossroads, and Khairkhona Library - and smaller libraries in the provinces are also opening. The Department’s plans include rebuilding libraries and restocking them with books.
