The Directorate of Cinema and Cultural Diffusion is responsible for overseeing the development of Cambodian film and video. It has its own basic studio facilities at 218 Street 200 (immediately opposite its main office) and is charged with the production of educational and documentary films for domestic consumption and the registration of film companies. At the time of writing there are 314 registered film companies in Cambodia, but only 65 of these are still in business. Of this number 40 are actually producing films while the remaining 25 produce karaoke videos. The Directorate lacks the funds to produce films by itself, and therefore relies on partnerships with other organisations. In recent years filmmaker Panh Rithy’s Atelier Varan project was located at its studio facilities, but this project ended in 2004. Opportunities for other co-productions are now being sought.
