When launched in October 2000, the National Festival of Painting and Sculpture was billed as the first 'genuine' art competition in 50 years. Envisaged as an annual event and funded by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, it features works by artists from all over the country, presented in the lobby of the new Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts headquarters building and the National Cultural Centre. The first festival of 2000 included wood sculpture, ceramics and more than 100 paintings by 71 artists from eight provinces.
