Most famous of all the Angkorian temples, the 240-hectare Angkor Wat was constructed over a 30-year period by Suryavarman II (1131-1150) in eponymous Angkor Wat style (1100-1175). A masterpiece of Khmer temple architecture, Angkor Wat is believed to have functioned both as a state temple and subsequently as a funerary monument to Suryavarman. Other temples which date from this period and may have served as prototypes for Angkor Wat include Banteay Samre, Beng Melea, Chau Say Tevoda, Thommanon and Wat Athvea. The complex is surrounded by a 200-metre wide moat and accessed via a causeway which passes through three enclosures before reaching the inner sanctuary, a massive temple-mountain dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, comprising one central and four surrounding lotus flower-shaped sandstone towers. The most noteworthy features of the complex include the gallery of bas-reliefs, which depict the mythological Battle of Kuru, the historical march of the army of Suryavarman against the Cham, scenes from Heaven and Hell and the classic 'Churning of the Sea of Milk' by gods and demons to make ambrosia, the nectar of the gods which gives immortality; and the fine carvings of the inner sanctuary, which feature apsara dancers and scenes from Hindu mythology.
