Housed in a partly underground building in Ueno Park, immediately to the south west of Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum was originally opened in 1926 to house exhibitions by a wide range of Japanese art organisations. After renovation in 1975 it began organising its own exhibitions. It has rental galleries which are rented to contemporary artists and a museum gallery in which it organises special exhibitions co-organised by Japanese newspapers, TV companies and other media agencies.
