Japan Foundation 31On 3 April 2006, the newly-renovated Japan Foundation Information Centre (JFIC) opened to the public. In addition to the conventional services offered by the former Japan Foundation Library for researchers of Japanese studies, JFIC has now expanded its functions to become a clearing house of general information on international exchange and cultural policies, as well as on Japanese culture. JFIC looks forward to serving users as a venue for information gathering and research as well as networking.
While the JFIC retains its key functions as a library including reference and lending services by librarians with its extensive collection of about 40,000 titles, the new JFIC Library (see below) will now offer clipping files of news articles that reveal current trends in international exchange and cultural policies, as well as special files introducing the Foundation’s domestic and overseas projects in detail. The files will even depict backstage stories and lively episodes experienced by JF staff, giving a realistic picture of the frontline of international exchange. JFIC will also exhibit some precious books on Japanese culture from the library’s 30-year-old archives.
With the new archive of audiovisual materials, visitors will be able to enjoy videos of performances conducted under Foundation programmes, such as those by the Kaze-no-ko theatrical company. Visitors can also listen to CDs of old Japanese narratives that were donated by the Japanese publishing house Shinchosha. The Japan Foundation’s database is available to visitors for gathering up-to-date information about organisations and activities involving international exchange.
At the reception desk, visitors can purchase Wochi Kochi, the Japan Foundation’s bimonthly magazine, and programmes and catalogues of exhibitions and other events hosted by the Foundation, as well as apply for membership in the JF Supporters Club.
The JFIC Commons, a small gathering space that can accommodate 30 people, will become the site for informal sessions and networking.
With a library, a lounge, a commons, and other facilities, JFIC is open to all those who are interested in Japanese studies and/or international cultural exchange. It is hoped that JFIC will become a new hub for international cultural exchange in the Tokyo area.
