Gunma Prefectural Museum of Natural HistoryGunma Prefectural Museum of Natural History opened on 1996, close to the site where the fossil of a Yabe's Giant Fallow Deer (sinomegaceros yabei) was discovered in 1797. The permanent exhibition of the Museum - comprising five sections - includes many specimens, as well as exhibits with which visitors can interact. Section A - The Age of the Earth introduces visitors to changes of the earth and the evolution of life, over about 4.6 billion years from the beginnings of the earth to the present day. Among the exhibits are many that show the entire skeletons of dinosaurs. Section B - The Nature and Environment of Gunma is themed on the natural environments of Gunma, classified according to altitude and location. Among the exhibits are a diorama showing a beech forest in Gunma - the largest in Japan; and an exhibit on Oze. Section C - The Darwin Room focuses on the evolution of life, featuring exhibits with which visitors can interact by touching, hearing, etc. Section D - Humans in Nature is an exhibition on humans, with features distinguishing them from other animals. Such features include walking on two feet, an upright posture; the production of tools; the use of fire; and burial. Section E - The Precious Earth presents the present status of environmental problems.
