Opened in 1986, Suntory Hall was built especially for classical music concerts, offering top quality performances featuring both nationally- and internationally-renowned players. The hall was designed on the advice of the late Herbert von Karajan, aiming for a harmony between the players and the audience and achieving one of the most beautiful acoustic effects in the world. The two differently-sized halls are both well equipped, offering perfect spaces for musical enjoyment.
The Suntory Hall hosts the annual Suntory Music Foundation Summer Festival. A series of concerts known as the Suntory Hall International Programme for Music Composition (featuring a different international composer each year) commenced here in 1986 and has been incorporated as part of the festival since 2004. The competition for the Akutagawa Award for Music Composition is also held here annually in the framework of the Festival.
