Believed to have been constructed on an earlier religious site by King Phothisarat or his son Sai Setthathirat I in the mid 16th century, That Phon is one of the most sacred stupas in Savannakhet Province. It is contemporaneous with the stupa at Wat That Phanom in neighbouring Thailand, Each February at full moon the That Phon Festival is held here.
