Luang Prabang Provincial Library was established in 1985, and extensively upgraded in 2003-4 with assistance from the Japan Sotoshu Relief Committee (JSRC), which provided books, equipment, training and funds. Although it is technically a branch of the National Library in Luang Prabang, Luang Prabang Provincial Library is in practice co-ordinated mainly by JSRC. Its collection comprises some 5,000 books, magazines and newspapers, including a special children’s section which has been developed in co-operation with the Children's Cultural Centre (CCC), Luang Prabang Province (located next door) with assistance from the Association for Sending Picture Books to Lao Children (ASPB). The library currently has just 200 books in English but receives many requests for English-language material and is therefore currently seeking funds to expand this collection. Luang Prabang Provincial Library oversees the activities of seven district libraries, covering Muang Nambak, Muang Viengkham, Muang Pakseng, Muang Pak Ou, Muang Chomphet, Muang Phonxai and Muang Nan respectively, which each hold between 300 and 500 books and newspapers.
